The Diocese of Bombay receives His Holiness Abune Mathias, the Patriarch of Ethiopia

15181407_1128588860551537_1132299464478283651_nThe Diocese of Bombay, organised a reception for HH Abune Mathias I, the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, on November 24, 2016. The Patriarch and other Ethiopian delegates visited the Cathedral after the inauguration of St Gregorios International Cancer care centre in Parumala, Kerala, and Bicentenary memorial celebration of Sabha Jyothis Pulikkottil Joseph Mar Dionysius Metropolitan, the previous day.The Ethiopian students, some of them from Puṇe and different parts of Maharashtra, led the reception ceremony with prayers and hymns in Amharic, the official language of Ethiopia and addresses by the dignitaries.

15202604_1128588370551586_3416042646353472707_n15241785_1128590373884719_1414113169734663659_nRev Fr Koshy Alex, the Secretary of Diocese of Bombay welcomed the guests, followed by the presidential address by HG Dr Geevarghese Mar Yulios, who called the historic event ”a God- given opportunity to welcome the supreme head of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church in Mumbai” and ” a blessing for the Indian Orthodox Church.”

Very Rev NS Verghese Cor-Episcopa, in his felicitation address called the event ” a moment of great joy.” “Whenever and wherever there is an Orthodox gathering, there is a sense of joy, love and fellowship which cannot be expressed in words. And greater is the joy when the Holy Patriarch of an Orthodox Church is in our midst,” said the Cor-Episcopa. He praised the presence of the Ethiopians in the parishes here and commended their “zeal, passion and devotion” to the Orthodox faith, further adding,” It is said, if you want to see a strong, orthodox person, then proceed to Ethiopia.”

15220104_1128590530551370_409475166417668463_nHE Mesfin Gebremariam, the Consulate General of Ethiopian Consulate in Mumbai, graced the occasion with his wife. He praised the cordial relations between India and Ethiopia and called the visit of HH Abune Mathias I “a manifestation of growing relations” between the two countries. “Ethiopia values India in our socio-economic development, since the establishment of our bilateral and diplomatic relations,” he added, while lauding the Indian missions of United Nations in Ethiopia. He further added the historic commonness between the nations and the Orthodox churches is another reason to explore more ways to strength the relations. The audience erupted in applause when the diplomat ended his speech with “Jai Ethiopia, Jai Hind.”

The choir of the Cathedral sang a melodious hymn, followed by the felicitation address by the Director of the Sunday Schools in the Bombay Diocese Dr Sunny Pariyaram. The delegates and Ethiopian patriarch were presented with mementos on behalf of HG Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, Metropolitan of Bombay Diocese.

15107455_1128589617218128_4464925273668975133_nHH Abune Mathias I, in his Patriarchal address, expressed his gratitude to His Holiness Baselius Marthoma Paulose II, the Catholicos of the East, and to His Grace Geevarghese Mar Coorilos Metropolitan, Priests, Deacons and the members of the Malankara Churc for the respect and hospitality given in his journey in India. “I am very happy to be among you, to meet you and see you this evening. I am glad to be visiting the churches under the Indian Orthodox Church and had the privilege of being received by HH Baselius Mar Thoma Paulose II, the Catholicos and Metropolitan Mar Coorilos.” His Holiness commemorated the Holy Fathers, St Thomas the Apostle and St Geevarghese Mar Gregorios and remembered their contribution to the Indian Orthodox Church.

The traditional drum played by the students while performing their hymn spread such positive vibes among the members of the church that made them sway on the beats of their songs.Ethiopian dignitaries and students were equally overwhelmed by the warm welcome given to them by the members of the church.

H.G.Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, the Diocesan Metropolitan, is celebrating his 67th birthday on 7th October.

14519921_967825876661137_5507892516472711778_nH.G.Geevarghese Mar Coorilos, the Diocesan Metropolitan celebrating his 67th birthday 0n 7th October, today. At present His Grace is the holding the Presidentship of MGOCSM, Gregorian Community and Vice Presidentship of St Thomas Orthodox Theological Seminary, Nagpur.

Mar Coorilos was born on 7 October 1949 at Kollad, near Kottayam, to Mr PK Kurian and Mrs Mary Kurian of the Puliyeril family. After his schooling, young George had his pre-degree studies at CMS College Kottayam. He took his bachelors in arts from the Calicut University and MA from Sree Venkateshwara University. He did his BD from Orthodox Theological Seminary, Kottayam, and got post-graduate diploma in Pastoral Theology from Heythrop College London University and post-graduate diploma in Theology and Mission from Urban Theology Unit, Shefield, UK.

He was ordained a sub-deacon in 1970 and a deacon in 1974 by Catholicos HH Baselios Mathews I. Dn George became a priest in 1975 and served as Vicar, St Gregorios Church, London. He is known for his works among students and thus was serving the MGOCSM as general secretary for almost a decade. This paved way for Fr George to visit many foreign countries.He was elected to the Episcopal rank in 1989 and thus became a monk in 1990 and was subsequently ordained in 1991. Soon, he was appointed as the Assistant Metropolitan, Mumbai Dioceses, and worked steadfast with late Dr Philipose Mar Theophilus for the progress of the Mumbai Diocese.His Grace has held many positions in the church and other Christian societies. He had attended many international conferences and interacted with many communities such as NCCI, CASA, WCC, and CMAI.

10847816_676293305817561_5002609197776509471_nGregorian Community, The dream of His Grace Mar Coorilos Metropolitan is taking shape with the establishment of the Gregorian Community-at Roha, about 120 kms from Mumbai. The vision is to create a caring, sharing, and loving community of individuals rooted in the love of God and having a zest for serving its neighbors. The motto of the community is worship, study and service. It is indeed a religious community to work under the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, the Patron being the Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, the Supreme Head of the Orthodox Syrian Church in India.The community is named after St. Gregorios of Parumala. About 77 acres if land has already been purchase at Roha and project work and infrastructure are under progress. A Community Chapel is constructed on the Gregorian Hill and temporary structures are made to accommodate people. An Old Age Home,  A Primary School and Special School for the Mentally Challenged has been started.The Gregorian Community stands to promote value system by treating everyone made in the image of God helping and serving to build up the community and rejuvenating the talents and strengths in each individual It nurtures facilities for families to come together, serve each other irrespective of age, sex, caste, or creed. The Community wants to usher in spiritual awakening among professionals and also to foster inter religious dialogue thereby further tolerance and communal harmony.

Proud moment for Dr.Robin Mathew (Cancer Scientist).... with 2016 Nobel Prize for Medicine

14543476_1057390787707809_1484837478_nDr.Robin Mathew , an Indian Academic, who is working in US, who is a Cancer Scientist just missed the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine,announced yesterday. His mentor Yoshinori Ohsumi won it. Dr Robin had been researching with Ohsumi for many many years.

Dr. Robin Mathew is from NE American Diocese of Malankara Orthodox Church. He is very active among our Sunday school and youth of Indian Orthodox Church New Jersey.

He is an Indian Academic studied B.Sc. In Kerala ( university 1st rank) M.Sc in Visakhapatnam, Research in BARC & AIIMS Delhi… Further Ph. D in California and US.. our young researchers can be motivated and a great example that Fear of God is the beginning of knowledge. Congratulations dear Dr. Robin …… We are proud of you… May the Almighty bless you more.
